Ubi sunt (literally "where are... [they]") is a phrase taken from the Latin Ubi sunt qui ante nos fuerunt?, meaning "Where are those who were before us?" - wikipedia
This suite of photos (series of prints) was taken the morning following an arson attack on a car in my neighbourhood of Montréal.
The intense and painterly beauty of this violent act stands in stark contrast to the conflagration that preceded it. As an analogue for strife, the series speaks to the conflictual nature of humanity. The fallout from this antagonistic behavioural pattern is embodied on all levels of cultural experience (political, social, sexual) as well as in the matter of physical material itself (ie. entropy, dust, decay). Viewed in this context, the photo series can be seen to visualize the aftermath or post-conflict of these forces.
